 Trichoderma is a beneficial fungus that provides the most cost effective means of biocontrol preventing or controlling plant damaging strains of fungus. Its mechanisms of action include antibiosis, parasitism, inducing host-plant resistance, and competition. Most biocontrol agents are from the species T. harzianum, T. viride and T. hamatum. The Trichoderma biocontrol agent will grow in its natural habitat on the root surface, and so affects root disease in particular and promotes root vigor, but can also be effective against foliar diseases.
Because Trichoderma as a biocontrol agent requires registration in the United States, it can generally be bought from a limited number of sources.  In the U.S., the most common offering is under the trade name Root Shield.
